About Northern Investor
Independent investing education for Canadians — evidence-based, Canada-specific, no hidden agendas.
Why We Started Northern Investor
Northern Investor was founded in 2025 by an investment analyst and a financial planner who kept encountering the same problem: Canadians who wanted to invest but couldn't find reliable, Canada-specific guidance to get started. The barrier wasn't motivation — it was complexity.
The Canadian investing landscape is uniquely complex. We have registered accounts that don't exist anywhere else — TFSAs, RRSPs, FHSAs, RESPs — each with distinct contribution rules, tax treatment, and strategic considerations. We have a dividend tax credit system that fundamentally changes how you evaluate income-producing investments. And we have a brokerage and fund industry that, for decades, has profited from that complexity rather than simplifying it.
The result? Millions of Canadians with TFSAs sitting as glorified savings accounts earning 1-2% interest. Investors paying 2%+ MERs on actively managed mutual funds when equivalent index ETFs charge 0.05-0.25%. Workers in their 30s and 40s who still don't understand the difference between a TFSA and an RRSP — or when to use which.
Northern Investor exists to close that gap. Every guide we publish is built for the Canadian investing system — our registered accounts, our tax rules, our brokerages, our regulatory environment. We educate. We don't sell.
